Simple Homemade Custard Recipe

Custard is a classic, comforting dessert that is loved all over the world for its smooth, creamy texture and gentle sweetness. This simple custard recipe is easy to make at home using basic ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. It can be enjoyed on its own, served warm or chilled, or paired with fruits, cakes, puddings, or pies. With a little care and patience, you can create a delicious homemade custard that tastes far better than store-bought versions.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups full-cream milk

  • 2 tablespoons custard powder (vanilla flavor) or cornflour

  • 3 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence (if using cornflour)

  • A pinch of salt (optional)

Method

Start by taking a small bowl and adding the custard powder or cornflour. Pour in about ¼ cup of cold milk and mix well until you get a smooth paste with no lumps. This step is important because adding the powder directly to hot milk can cause clumping.

Next, pour the remaining milk into a thick-bottomed saucepan. Add the sugar and place the pan on medium heat. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves completely. Allow the milk to warm up, but do not let it boil at this stage.

Once the milk is hot, reduce the flame to low. Slowly add the prepared custard mixture into the hot milk while stirring continuously. This constant stirring is key to achieving a smooth and creamy custard. Keep stirring in a circular motion so the custard does not stick to the bottom of the pan.

Continue cooking on low heat for 5–8 minutes. You will notice the custard gradually thickening. Make sure you keep stirring, as custard can burn easily if left unattended. When the custard reaches a thick but pourable consistency, turn off the heat.

If you are using cornflour instead of custard powder, add the vanilla essence at this stage and mix well. The custard will continue to thicken slightly as it cools.

Serving Suggestions

You can serve custard warm for a comforting dessert, especially during cooler weather. For a chilled version, allow the custard to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least one hour. Stir before serving to maintain a smooth texture.

Custard pairs beautifully with fresh fruits like bananas, apples, mangoes, or berries. It can also be poured over sponge cake, bread pudding, or jelly for a more indulgent treat.

Tips for Perfect Custard

  • Always use low heat after adding the custard mixture.

  • Stir continuously to prevent lumps and burning.

  • If lumps form, you can quickly blend the custard using a hand blender.

  • Adjust sugar according to your taste preference.

This simple custard recipe is versatile, beginner-friendly, and perfect for everyday desserts. Once you master it, you can experiment with flavors like chocolate, caramel, or saffron to create your own variations. Enjoy your homemade custard!
